Report misstated views on language
In typical “major media fashion” Marisa Iati in her report Trump says immigrant criminal suspects are ‘not people,’ does what liberal reporters seem to do too frequently – she put words not spoken into someone else’s mouth.
Reporting on Bernie Moreno (running for the Republican nomination to run for Senate in Ohio) she states that Moreno wrongly claimed that English is the official language of the US. Moreno did not say that. He said that people who come here should learn English, like he did; and, he said “We don’t need to vote in five different languages. We learn the language.”
While the U,S, has not declared English its official language, English is spoken exclusively by more than two-thirds of the population. The federal government uses English for writing all laws, and in all communications. English is the de facto official language of the United States. Whether or not a country has an “official language,” smart immigrants learn the language that is spoken by the majority of the people of the country into which they immigrated. If I move to Portugal, I will learn Portuguese, whether it is that country’s official language or not.
