Fire hits large abandoned building in Evansville
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - A fire at a large abandoned commercial building in Evansville sent heavy flames shooting dozens of feet from the roof into the nighttime sky.
The fire was reported about 2 a.m. Friday in a mostly residential neighborhood north of the city's downtown.
District fire chief Amy Smith tells WFIE-TV that arriving crews found flames coming from the roof of the brick building that covers about half a city block.
Firefighters used at least three ladder trucks to shoot water into the building. Smith says a wall collapse and burning debris had damaged some nearby garages but the fire was otherwise contained to the building.
No injuries were immediately reported.
