Arches, Canyonlands float increase in entrance, other fees

MOAB, Utah (AP) - Two national parks in Utah are proposing fee increases to improve visitor services and want input on how to deal with increased traffic.

The National Park Service says fees at Arches and Canyonlands national parks haven't gone up since 1996.

Under the proposal, the entrance fee for private vehicles for a seven-day pass would more than double from $10 to $25.

The agency also is floating a reduced off-peak entrance fee of $10 for private vehicles at Arches to encourage visits at less crowded times.

A public meeting is scheduled Jan. 29 in Moab on the proposed fee increases, which also extend to motorcycles, camping and tours of narrow sandstone canyons at Arches known as the Fiery Furnace. The comment period ends Feb. 13.
