The historic Mettawa-area home of statesman Adlai Stevenson II has been designated a national historic landmark, officials revealed Wednesday. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis announced the honor, which recognizes the Stevenson farm as a place that possesses exceptional value and quality in illustrating or interpreting the heritage of the United States. The property is owned by the Lake County Forest Preserve District, and it's used for discussions about government and public policy. The designation doesn't affect ownership. During his life, Stevenson served as Illinois' governor and as an ambassador, and he ran for president.
