Bloomington man faces 55 years for shooting death

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) - A 28-year-old Bloomington man has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for the shooting death of another man as he ran away.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph (http://bit.ly/1FiJw9y ) reports Michael Mays was convicted in January of killing 27-year-old Aaron Robinson during a May 2013 incident.

The Pantagraph reports Mays made a statement to the McLean County Judge Scott Drazewski in which he claimed Robinson was a dangerous, drug-dealing gang member and apologized to the victim's family. Mays' defense has argued that Robinson was the aggressor.

Judge Drazewski says claims of self-defense lacked credibility since Robinson was shot at close range as he ran.

Authorities say the dispute ended in the victim's driveway.

Mays has also been ordered to pay $4,800 in funeral costs to the family.
