No injuries in early morning house fire in Elgin

No one was injured in an early morning attic fire in Elgin, authorities said.

Officials were called to the 600 block of Villa Street at 2:45 a.m. Thursday and found considerable smoke and flames in the attic of the house.

The fire was extinguished and declared under control at 3:05 a.m., authorities said.

No home occupants or firefighters were injured in the blaze, authorities said.

Officials said the fire caused extensive damage in the attic, and that moderate damage was reported on the second floor.

The building was determined to be unsafe to inhabit, authorities said, and occupants had alternate places to stay.

A preliminary damage report estimated damages to be approximately $30,500, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
