Walker proposes eliminating cap on voucher program

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - State Superintendent Tony Evers says Gov. Scott Walker's proposal to not increase funding for public schools while expanding the private school voucher program is "not a good starting point."

Evers reacted Tuesday to Walker's proposal that would eliminate the enrollment cap on Wisconsin's private-school voucher program.

And money for the vouchers would come out of aid from the public school the student is leaving.

Walker's budget would also hold public school funding flat. But Evers says that will amount to a cut as districts won't have more money to meet rising costs.

Evers says he's looking forward to working with the Republican-controlled Legislature on changes.

The Legislature will be working on the budget for the next four months.
