Bullets found at Elgin middle school
Two .22-caliber bullets were found Wednesday at Kimball Middle School in Elgin, officials said Thursday.
A student found one bullet on the floor of the boys locker room about 3 p.m. Wednesday, at which time he brought it to a teacher. A subsequent search of the school yielded one more bullet, according to John Heiderscheidt, coordinator of safety and security for Elgin Area School District U-46.
School officials notified the Elgin Police Department, who conducted an investigation of their own. On Thursday morning, Elgin police did another search of the school with police dogs who searched all lockers "to assure no weapons or ammunition (were) in the building," said Principal Al Tamburrino, in an email message sent to parents Thursday.
The principal's message says the person who brought the bullets to school was identified. U-46 officials refused to say whether that person was a student, and if so, whether the person faces disciplinary action.
No weapons or guns were located, and no threats occurred or were reported, Tamburrino wrote.
Parent Joe Wrona said his son was in eighth-period gym class when the first bullet was found in the boys locker room and it was given to the gym teacher. Wrona said students remained at school Wednesday afternoon past normal dismissal time during the investigation.
