Saint Alphonsus kindergarten students celebrate Red Nose Day

Thanks to a donation by Saint Alphonsus parent Katy Franz, the Prospect Heights' kindergarten students celebrated Red Nose Day.

The donation was made in honor of Franz's daughter's birthday. The students, along with teacher Laura Smith, learned that by having fun and raising money they could change the lives of children living in poverty.

This philanthropic gesture is not the first for Saint Alphonsus students. The Prospect Heights' elementary school has a long history of public service, including raising money for victims of natural disasters, animal shelters and other charities.

Saint Alphonsus students also participate in a monthly food drive to benefit the Saint James food pantry.

Even the youngest Saint Alphonsus students are involved in community outreach. Earlier this year, the Pre-K class germinated vegetable seeds and will transplant the seedlings into the parish "Garden of Eaten."

The harvest will provide fresh vegetables to the less fortunate who have a limited access to healthy foods.
