Grayslake rail safety

Grayslake officials have issued a reminder about the approaching Illinois Rail Safety Week and the police department's involvement in the effort. It'll run from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Sept. 19. Officials said the idea is to promote vehicle and pedestrian safety around railroad tracks and trains. As part of the week, Grayslake police will have enforcement details at various railroad grade crossings and Metra commuter stations. Police will cite drivers and pedestrians who disobey the laws associated with railroad grade crossings and railroad property. In addition, police officers will distribute literature to the public that contains information on how to be safe around trains and train tracks. In Illinois last year, there were 134 crossing collisions involving motor vehicles, which resulted in 55 injuries and 24 fatalities, officials said.
