A passion for serving Geneva
Kelly Nowak is one of seven citizens running for three open seats on the Geneva School Board April 7. She has served two terms.
We support her for multiple reasons.
One, is her strength in the area of finance. She formerly worked as a banking professional; has served on the finance committee; and done extensive work at the state and regional levels with the Illinois Association of School Boards.
Second, she has articulated some questions regarding the Common Core tests being currently administered. She says that she believes in "instruction which inspires and engages students." We share the same concern about quality instruction and the amount of testing being done today. Do the new mandates take away class time that should be given to furthering the arts and sciences?
Lastly, and most importantly, is her ability and willingness to connect with the people of Geneva. She and her husband have lived and raised their three children in Geneva. She is known for her volunteerism, and passion for Geneva as expressed through her Daily Photo blog. But she also spoke of the importance of ongoing public meetings with citizens. I got a glimpse of what that would be like, by being invited for the first time in 25 years, to a recent meeting with other former board members and Superintendent Kent Mutchler, plus two representative board members, to ask questions and discuss issues. It was fabulous.
Please see that our district continues in a good direction by giving Kelly your vote.
