East Tennessee State to raise $26.6 million for new stadium

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) - East Tennessee State has launched a fundraising campaign to build a football stadium on the southwest corner of campus that will seat 10,000-plus fans and cost about $26.6 million.

School officials announced their plans Wednesday at a news conference featuring former Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith, who played at ETSU. Smith is co-chairing the stadium fundraising committee with country music star and ETSU alum Kenny Chesney.

Officials want to have the stadium ready for the start of the 2017 season.

ETSU is relaunching a football program it had shut down for financial reasons in 2003. ETSU will usher in this new era Sept. 3 against Kennesaw State in a game expected to take place on the campus of Science Hill High School in Johnson City.
