Des Plaines farmers market returns after 7-year hiatus

The Des Plaines farmers market returned Friday after a seven-year hiatus, offering a host of fruits and vegetables and other goods.

The market, on Ellinwood Street between Lee and Pearson streets near the library, is scheduled to run on Friday afternoons from 3 to 7 p.m. through Oct. 16 - an idea proposed by 1st Ward Alderman Patti Haugeberg as a way to bring out-of-state farmers to Des Plaines a day early, since many are already planning to attend other suburban markets on Saturdays and Sundays.

Market managers Connie Groat and Monika Montemayor are donating half the vendors fees, after expenses, to the Des Plaines Community Foundation in lieu of a license fee they would have had to pay the city to operate the market.
