Buffalo Grove 12, Prospect 9: Freshman Jack Vaselaney gave the visiting Bison a lift with 5⅔ quality relief innings, during which the Bison bats came alive.
Trey Cervantes finished 4-for-5 with 2 RBI and Dan Levato drove in 3 runs as Buffalo Grove (8-12, 3-4) did all its scoring the fourth through seventh inning, including a big 5-run rally in the seventh.
Prospect (15-5, 5-2) also scored 5 in the seventh but couldn't quite catch up. Mike Piotrowski homered and drove in 5 runs for the Knights, and Lucas Karz and Grant Miller had doubles.
Vaselaney allowed 3 earned runs in his stint and struck out two.
Fremd 2, Palatine 1: Fremd's Dan Pinderski out-dueled Palatine's Alex Breytenbach as both starters came up with strong efforts in MSL West play.
Ian Bohn got Fremd (10-8, 4-3) started with a solo homer in the first inning, and J.T. Kolderup drove in the other run for the Vikings with a sacrifice fly.
Pinderski allowed 5 hits in 6 innings, and Bohn pitched the seventh to earn a save.
Breytenbach allowed 3 hits in his 6 innings, striking out three and walking none. Matthew Lamm had 2 hits for Palatine (7-13, 2-5), and Danny Schneberger drove in the Pirates' run in the fourth inning.
Elk Grove 7, Wheeling 3: Brandon Post went 3-for-3 and Grenadiers pitchers Jonathan Maday, Joe Lopez and Christian Camacho combined on a 5-hitter to lift Elk Grove in MSL East play.
Matt Wary went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in 2 runs for the Grens (13-4, 6-1), who moved into first place in the East. Maday earned the win after working 4 innings and allowing 1 hit.
Matt Vollmer drove in both runs for Wheeling (6-12, 1-6).
St. Viator 12, St. Patrick 2: Ben Dickey, Matt Darling, Dan Sullivan, Cole Kmet and Trusten Annin each drove in runs with hits as the host Lions erupted for 8 runs in bottom of the sixth inning to claim an East Suburban Catholic Conference victory.
Dickey, Kmet, Annin, Kevin Monson and Jason Wilhite each had 2 hits for the Lions (15-6, 4-3).
Aaron Tres pitched all 6 innings for St. Viator, striking out five and allowing no earned runs.
Hersey 3, Rolling Meadows 1: The host Huskies (5-10-1, 4-3) limited Rolling Meadows to 3 hits in Mid-Suburban East play.
Barrington 12, Hoffman Estates 0 (5 inn): The Mid-Suburban West leaders stayed unbeaten against MSL competition as Luke Johnson went 3-for-3 with a double and drove in 3 runs.
Casey Dodge had 2 hits, one of them a double, and drove in 2 runs for Barrington (15-6, 7-0). Anthony LeLaurentis pitched 4 innings, giving up 2 hits and striking out four, and Dillon Alexander relieved with 1 scoreless inning for Barrrington.
Hoffman Estates dropped to 9-7 overall and 2-5 in the West.
Downers Grove South 7, Leyden 3: Hector Herrera went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a run, but the host Eagles couldn't overcome their 5 errors in West Suburban Gold action.
Peter Hamot struck out six in 5 innings and got the win, while Kevin Nevarez allowed 1 earned run in 4 innings but was tagged with the loss.
Saturday's games
St. Viator rallied to win 4-3 against Marian Catholic, salvaging a split after dropping the first East Suburban Catholic Conference game between them 9-1.
Jack Coney had the big hit in the second game, an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Matt Darling also came up big, delivering a home run and 2 singles to help make a complete-game winner of George Burny.
Dan Sullivan had about the only bright spot in the first game for the Lions with a solo homer in the seventh inning.
