214@100: 'The Thing' sculptor gets start at Hersey

Lou Cella's most formative years artistically came during his art classes at Hersey High School. Since then, Cella has done many sculptures and models across the country.

“The quality of the art department presented so much opportunity. Because of that, I truly felt that art would always be a part of my life,” said Cella, who graduated in 1981.

After attending Illinois State University and working at an art studio, Cella opened Lou Cella Sculptures. Comic book superhero The Thing from the “Fantastic Four” is his favorite work of art. One of his own sculptures is now used as a reference point when illustrating the character for publication.

His love of sculpting still drives him. “If I never made any money, I would still be doing it,” Cella said. “I've had my share of rejections along the way. I still do.

“Many of the artists I work with never even started until after the age of 60. It is never too late for art.”
