18-year-old Quincy man convicted in 4th of July killing

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) - An 18-year-old Quincy man has been convicted of first-degree murder in a Fourth of July shooting that left one man dead and another man injured.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reports (http://bit.ly/1l7Phmb ) that Gavin Masters will be sentenced to at least 72 years in prison at a Dec. 23 hearing. His mother sat behind him in court on Tuesday evening as he found guilty in the shooting death of 21-year-old Randy Bowser-Smith of Quincy and the wounding of 21-year-old Skylar L. Osborne.

Jurors deliberated about five hours. Quincy police said a dispute about marijuana led to the shootings.

Defense attorney Drew Schnack argued that prosecutors didn't meet the burden of proof.

Bowser-Smith's family said it a statement that they are pleased with the verdict and justice was served.
