Foes of quarry near Lafayette eye permit appeal
AMERICUS, Ind. — Opponents of a proposed stone quarry in a rural area near Lafayette say they’re considering whether to appeal a state agency’s decision to grant a permit for the project.
The Tennessee-based Rogers Group is planning the quarry on 524 acres bordering the Wabash River near the Tippecanoe County community of Americus.
The permit issued by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources leaves only approval from a county zoning board for work to begin.
Kay Miller of the Americus Area Community Coalition tells the Journal & Courier the group will continue fighting the quarry that would be within about a mile of some 200 homes.
Rogers Group officials say they’ll meet with residents and that its policy is to keep blast vibrations at no more than half allowable limits.
