Huntley radio station offers oldies but goodies

Here we are at the end of the year … well almost. But as we say goodbye to 2015, we look forward to the new year and more exciting programs being developed at 101.5 FM, Huntley Community Radio.

It's been a great year for us, the first as a full, low power, licensed FM station. We added many new shows, trained new volunteers and began a new service - live remote coverage of the Huntley High School football games.

In the past, we've been reminding you of some of our 40-plus shows you might enjoy. Here are a few more.

We've been broadcasting the Centegra Health System Physician Lectures for more than two years. Each lecture is presented by an outstanding medical specialist, and subjects can vary from ovarian cancer, carpal tunnel, kidney stones, colon health, sports injuries and more.

Best of all, you can go to our website, Huntleyradio.com, maneuver to our podcasts, and listen to all, or as many as you'd like, of the lectures. These Physician Lectures also can be heard weekdays from 2 to 3 p.m.

If you're a lover of classical music, you should join the Listener's Club of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. It's easy and there's no membership fee. Just tune in Tuesdays and Saturdays at 5 p.m. and you're a member. Listen to Jim Kendros and Wendy Evans familiarize yourselves with music from their upcoming concerts, learn about the composers, the symphony musicians and more.

And if nostalgia is your thing, we give you "Rick's Radio Roots." It's a collection of old-time radio shows brought to you by host Rick Haggerty.

Travel back to the days when there were no TV sets, computers or iPods, but when you still pictured, in color and high definition, as you listen to "Fibber McGee and Molly," "The Falcon" or "Life With Luigi." Tune into 101.5 FM Mondays and Fridays from 3 to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Rick has hundreds of these old shows to share with you.

And now another look behind the scenes of station WHRU. We're pleased to introduce one more of our wonderful volunteers, Bill Geheren, or "Sir William," as he likes to be called.

He is one of the most prolific volunteers our station has had the privilege of knowing. Not only is he the producer, writer and co-host of "2 Dudes and the Duchess," he also produces and hosts "3 Guys Walk into a Bar," "Huntley Radio Morning News" and "Huntley Radio Evening News."

In addition, Bill serves on our executive board and is our director of marketing. Could there be more? There is! Bill, a longtime Huntley resident, works full-time as the director of sales for Heritage Woods in Huntley, an assisted living community. He and his wife, Mia, have four sons.

Looking ahead to 2016, we at Huntley Radio wish you and yours a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. And when you're making your new year's resolutions, make one more to remind you to tune into 101.5 FM and enjoy many hours of great radio.
