Sleek sports car highlights Mundelein High School career seminar

Sports car on hand for career fair at Mundelein High

The weight room at Mundelein High School had a special visitor Thursday - a sleek 911 Carrera 4S brought to the school as part of a career seminar.

About 300 students enrolled in AP physics, physics, engineering graphics and special education technology automotive courses, attended the presentation by Kirt Shore and Brynnen Crosson of Porsche USA.

Careers in engineering, marketing, advertising, and sales were discussed during one-hour sessions, which lasted throughout the school day.

"The goal is to get kids energized and give them some idea of the type of jobs available in the United States," said Shore, after-sales manager with Porsche. "We look for the 'A' players. You never know what will come from one of the events."

Shore sees the presentation as a way to introduce the brand and also to give students the opportunity to see and understand what people do in their jobs at Porsche.

The presentation was part of a Mundelein High School program called Mustang Doors, which is headed by Dave Mork, chairman of the fine and applied arts department.

Doors in an acronym for Doors of Opportunity Relative to Students. The program exposes students to various career opportunities and the path they need to take to achieve their career goals.

Also on Thursday, students in honors anatomy and physiology classes heard from a panel of medical professionals who discussed their work and the preparation involved in their careers. The panel included an internist, a general practitioner, an oncologist, a gastroenterologist, a nurse and a cardiovascular surgeon. The students learned about yjr type of training needed and the personal side of medical careers.

"Kids, before they leave high school, have an idea of what they want to do, and then what the career path is to get there," Mork said. "We are trying to give them as much exposure as we can while they're still within our walls."
