Man sentenced to prison for Naperville assault
An Oak Park man has been sentenced to 57 months in prison for brutally attacking a man last May in downtown Naperville.
Paul Magee, 26, was convicted in January of aggravated battery in connection with the May 19, 2013, beating of a 27-year-old man near the intersection of Benton Avenue and Washington Street. He was sentenced last week by a DuPage County judge.
A spokesman for the state's attorney's office said Magee will get credit for the nearly 10 months he served in the county jail while awaiting his trial.
The attack happened about 2:30 a.m. while the victim was walking home roughly a half-mile from a Naperville bar. He testified during the trial that a black sedan pulled up behind him.
When the man heard yelling coming from the car, he initially walked toward it. Then the man tried to run away.
Magee got out of the car, caught the victim and then punched him several times in the face, prosecutors have said. When the victim tried to get up and walk away, Magee punched him several more times. The victim, who suffered severe injuries, was treated at Edward Hospital.
During the trial, Magee's defense attorney argued the victim started the fight and that Magee was defending himself.
