Naperville .1K race raises funds for veteran families

Perhaps one of the shorter community races in Naperville history started and finished within seconds Sunday.

It was the Judd-A-Thon, a new .1K race sponsored by the Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873.

The race began at precisely 10:01 a.m., and the fastest runners finished within seconds, as the course was only 109 yards. Others jogged more slowly or even walked with canes.

Racers' registration fees and donations raised money for the VFW National Home for Children, which provides housing for veteran families that are in crisis because of deployment, disability, divorce or death.

Organizers called the .1K a "short race that can go a long way to help children" and said they will consider making it an annual occasion.
