Warren 3, Zion-Benton 2: Martin Fuentes scored twice for the Blue Devils in their North Suburban Lake win.
Alex Fratila also had a goal for Warren (10-2-1), and Ivan Esdquivel had 2 assists. Miko Gokic also earned an assist.
Waukegan 2, Vernon Hills 0: Waukegan scored twice in the second half to win the nonconference game.
Vernon Hills coach Mike McCaulou said his Cougars played a "great first 40 minutes, creating some good chances and holding their defensive shape." The Cougars came out in the second half early on with two great scoring opportunities, but did not capitalize in front of net.
Waukegan broke the scoreless tie when the Bulldogs whipped in a cross and the wind took the ball into the far post, corner-side net. Then in the last few minutes Waukegan capitalized on a counter attack as the Cougars pushed numbers forward to try and get an equalizer.
"I thought our boys played well for a majority of the game," McCaulou said. "We had some clear-cut scoring chances that we have to take advantage of against a team like Waukegan. They possess so much skill all over the field that when you get an opportunity like we did you have to make the most of it. In the second half Waukegan wore us down and we were on our heels a little bit.
"I thought the first goal was a bit unlucky for us, but they were pressing," McCaulou added. "I thought Brennan Reback (9 saves) in net for us was our best player. He stood on his head in the second half. He kept us in the game. I also felt that Cole Guillaume up front for us was such a threat all game long. He was causing havoc for Waukegan's backs all game, and his work rate was impeccable. We know we can hang with anybody. We just have to put the ball away in these games."
Benet 3, Carmel 2: Scott Cloe scored a goal in each half for the host Corsairs in their East Suburban Catholic Conference loss.
Lakes 3, Grant 0: Nathan Munsterman had 23 saves in a losing effort for the Bulldogs in North Suburban Prairie play.
