Liberty Loop Kicks Off July 4th

Start the Fourth on your feet! The eighth annual Liberty Loop 5K Run/Walk returns to Techny Prairie Park and Fields on July 4 at 7:30am, followed by a one-mile Liberty Lap Fun Run for ages 4-10.

The scenic, certified 5K course begins and ends near the Techny Prairie Center. Water stations will be set up throughout the course and at the finish line, where snacks will be available for the runners. Volunteers will help at check-in and serve as course monitors.

Produced by the Northbrook Park District, the Liberty Loop has grown steadily over the years. Last July, almost 430 runners and walkers participated, ranging in age from 13-75 and including people from all over the Chicago area as well as out-of-state visitors.

Overall male and female winners receive medals, and all preregistered participants receive Dri-Fit T-shirts and goodie bags. A supervised activity area is available for children ages 4-10 during the race.

"This is a fun, healthy event to kick off the 4th of July celebration in Northbrook," said John Wilhelm, Leisure Services Supervisor with the Park District. "It sets a great tone for the rest of the day."

Since the 4th of July is a day for family activities, young children can race on a one-mile, modified Liberty Loop course, starting and ending at the same location as the 5K and winding along the Trail Through Time. Junior joggers will receive a T-shirt, gift bag and miniature American flag at the finish line. The Liberty Lap Fun Run begins at 8:30am, and all children in the race will have a number 1 on their race bibs. More than 130 children ran the Liberty Lap last year.

Entry forms are available online at nbparks.org and at Park District Registration Offices. Race-day registration is available on-site from 6:30-7am.

The early registration fee for the 5K (before June 22) is $23 for ages 13 and older or $15 for ages 6-12. Children 5 and under can race at no charge but need to be registered. The fee for the Fun Run is $10.
