Salute, Inc. receives $20,000 grant from national nonprofit

With a number of in-person charity events and fundraisers sidelined because of the pandemic, a Palatine-based nonprofit that helps veterans and their families just got a big boost.

Salute, Inc. received a $20,000 grant from the Disabled Veterans National Foundation that supports the organizations' shared missions to help those injured during military service.

Amid the breakout of COVID-19, there are more and more veterans and families reaching out for assistance, officials said.

"It's thanks to these types of grants and donations from individuals in our community that we're able to continue our mission and help so many veterans in need," said Mary Beth Beiersdorf, Salute's executive director, in an announcement of the grant award.

Since 2003, Salute has helped nearly 15,000 military personnel and their families with rent and mortgage assistance, car payments, utility and medical bills, and everyday essentials like groceries.

The Lanham, Maryland-based Disabled Veterans National Foundation, founded in 2007, regularly provides grants to organizations that support disabled and at-risk veterans who leave the military wounded physically or psychologically.
