Cubs finish 2014 on winning note

MILWAUKEE - The Cubs finished their 2014 season Sunday with a 5-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

Anthony Rizzo hit his 32nd home run of the season, a 2-run drive in the first inning, and starting pitcher Jacob Turner went 5-plus innings.

The Cubs wound up with a record of 73-89, as they posted their first season of fewer than 90 losses since they went 75-87 in 2010.

Chris Coghlan got the Cubs going in the first inning with a leadoff walk against Brewers pitcher Mike Fiers. After Javier Baez struck out, Rizzo went deep, sending a drive over the wall in center field.

The Brewers came back with a run in the second inning before they tied it in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, the Cubs got 2 more, with Arismendy Alcantara doubling down the right-field line to score Rizzo and Jorge Soler.

Rick Renteria finished his first season as Cubs manager.

"A lot of excitement going on in baseball, a lot of people competing for a postseason berth or position, and I hope that next year, we're talking about the same thing, that maybe we're in that conversation," he said.
