Hoffman Estates bedroom fire causes $100,000 worth of damages

A fire that started in the bedroom of a Hoffman Estates house caused an estimated $100,000 in damages, but might have been worse had the door and windows in the room been open, fire officials said Sunday.

Hoffman Estates Fire Battalion Chief Patrick Fortunato said one of the residents of the one-story home at 1060 Apple Street may have prevented further property damage by closing the bedroom door after opening it to discover that the room was on fire.

"The bedroom door was closed and the windows were closed, so the room itself remained sealed," Fortunato said.

The resident only opened the bedroom door because they saw a little bit of smoke coming through the gaps in the door. It was only when they opened the door that enough smoke came out of the room to set off the smoke detector in the hallway.

Fortunato said firefighters arrived at the house at 3:36 p.m. and were able to extinguish the fire in fifteen minutes without incident.

"It was very routine," Fortunato said.

The three family members who were home when the fire was discovered evacuated the house before first responders got there. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Schaumburg Fire Department, Streamwood Fire Department and Palatine Rural Fire Protection District provided assistance in the response.
