Elgin Post 57 falls short against Michigan's champ

The Elgin Post 57 baseball team endured its first loss at the American Legion Great Lakes Regional Tournament in downstate Alton on Thursday.

Elgin Post 57, the Illinois state champion, dropped a 5-1 decision to Midland Post 165, the Michigan state champion.

Elgin Post 57 slipped to 1-1 in the tournament while Midland Post 165 improved to 2-0.

Larkin graduate Brayden Royse took the loss for Elgin, allowing 5 earned runs on 8 hits in 5⅔ innings. Relievers Antonio Danesi (South Elgin) and Will King (Larkin) combined to pitch 3⅓ scoreless innings, but Post 57 was unable to dent the scoreboard until the top of the ninth inning, when Austin Sayre's two-out single drove in fellow South Elgin graduate Kyle Hays with the team's only run.

Elgin Post 57 faces a must-win situation Friday with an elimination game against Troy (Ohio) Post 43 on at 10 a.m.
