Woman, three children injured by illegal fireworks in Elgin

A woman and three children suffered burns Saturday night when struck by illegal fireworks while leaving Elgin's city fireworks display, police said.

According to police, the victims were leaving the display area near Wellington Avenue and National Street shortly after the fireworks show ended when they were struck.

The 38-year-old woman suffered minor burns to her leg, neck, and face, police said. A 4-year-old girl suffered minor burns to her leg and foot; a 10-year-old boy suffered minor burns to his hand; and a 15-year-old boy had minor burns to his leg, according to police. All four were taken to either Presence Saint Joseph Hospital or Advocate Sherman Hospital, where they were being treated for their injuries.

Police did not indicate whether the woman and three children were related or had attended the fireworks display together.
