Ceremony to recognize formerly homeless soccer players
DETROIT (AP) - A group of formerly homeless Detroit residents will be recognized for competing in last year's Homeless World Cup soccer regionals in New York.
The 8-member Team Resilience, its sponsors and Homeless World Cup founder Mel Young are scheduled to attend Thursday's ceremony at the Neighborhood Service Organization's Bell Building.
Homeless World Cup representatives are considering Detroit as a future host city for the soccer tournament.
Team Resilience members live at the Bell Building, which provides apartments for homeless adults and serves as the NSO's headquarters.
Soccer turf donated to the Neighborhood Service Organization also will be dedicated at Thursday's event. The turf will be installed this spring outside the Bell Building on Detroit's west side.
