Florida's Bryan Cox Jr. out for bowl game after hip surgery
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. will miss the Birmingham Bowl following hip surgery.
Interim coach D.J. Durkin said Thursday that Cox's injury has been "deteriorating over time" and needed to be addressed. The third-year sophomore from Fort Lauderdale had surgery Monday.
Cox, the son of former NFL standout Bryan Cox, ranks third on the team with four sacks. He also has 29 tackles, including six for loss.
Durkin says everyone else appears healthy for the Jan. 3 bowl against East Carolina.
Durkin says he hasn't heard of anyone being academically ineligible for the bowl, saying "no one as of right now. Obviously, grades haven't come out yet for that."
