Northbrook Park District Seeks Hall of Fame Nominees

The Northbrook Park District is accepting nominations for its Hall of Fame and Sports Hall of Fame, located inside the Northbrook Sports Center. The Hall of Fame, established in 1978, recognizes volunteers who significantly improved Park District programs or facilities. The Sports Hall of Fame, created in 1995, recognizes the accomplishments of athletes who are from Northbrook or have used Northbrook Park District facilities as their primary training location.

The criteria for nomination are:

Hall of Fame

• Nominees must have helped the Park District significantly for at least five years.

• Nominees must have served as role models for the community, especially its youth.

• Nominees cannot have received payment for their service.

Sports Hall of Fame

• Nominees can be current or former Northbrook residents who reached professional status in sports or gained recognition through amateur sports at the National, International or Olympic level.

• Non-residents who meet that standard are eligible if they trained at a Northbrook Park District facility for at least three years.

Previous honorees include Jason Kipnis, Northbrook native and second baseman for the Cleveland Indians; Heather Aseltine, 2002 National Collegiate Figure Skating Champion and director of Northbrook-On-Ice; Olympic gold medal speed skaters Anne Henning and Dianne Holum; world champion barrel-jumper, speed skater and cyclist Richard Widmark; and community volunteers Mark Gerstein, Jeff Steinback and Darryl Skale.

Nominations will be accepted until March 1. The Board of Park Commissioners will review the nominations, notify approved candidates and invite them to an induction ceremony.
