Tollway warns of email scam targeting I-PASS users
For once, you can ignore a message about owing money with no consequences.
Illinois tollway officials Thursday warned I-PASS users to beware of emails from a so-called E-Z Pass Collection Agency.
The emails claim that recipients owe money for missing tolls and may have subject lines with "in arrears for driving on toll road" or "payment for driving on toll road."
The E-ZPass Group is a coalition of 25 toll organizations across 15 states, including the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. However, the emails and the collection agency are "a phishing scam" that uses the E-ZPass logo, tollway administrators said.
No I-PASS accounts have been compromised and users are advised to delete the emails.
The Illinois tollway coordinates with E-ZPass so that I-PASSes work in other member states such as Ohio, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, Maine and Virginia.
"The tollway is monitoring the situation closely and will work with the E-ZPass Group to keep customers informed of any further developments," officials said.
