Elk Grove data center expands

Louisiana-based CenturyLink Technology Solutions hosted an open house Thursday for about 75 clients and vendors as the company unveiled a 60,000-square-foot addition to its data center in Elk Grove Village.

The Elk Grove Village data centewr, originally built in 2000, now has a total of 164,000 square feet to help house cloud and other managed technology services for financial, pharmaceutical, online shopping companies, among others, said Joel Stone, vice president of global data center operations at CenturyLink.

"This expansion allows our customers to also grow," Stone said.

The company, which offers highly secure facilities, has nearly 60 such data centers worldwide, including two in downtown Chicago and Elk Grove Village.

The Elk Grove Village data center has about 20 employees, and two to three more workers are expected to be hired next year as its services expanded, Stone said.

Data centers are part of a growing industry that provides various technology services, such as housing websites, email and other Internet-related services, as well as telecom and data storage services for companies and government offices. There are 74 data centers in Illinois that were built by various companies, according to DataCenterMap.com.

Besides CenturyLink, ByteGrid Holdings LLC acquired a data center in Aurora and BladeRoom USA built a new data center in Mount Prospect earlier this year.

In addition, Skokie-based Forsythe Technology built a 221,000-square-foot data center in Elk Grove Village earlier this year.
