Remains of youngest Catholic saint displayed in Chicago
As the bones of an 11-year-old Italian farm girl traveled over the Chicago Skyway and into Illinois early Monday, police cruisers - from both the Illinois State Police and the Chicago Police Departments - joined her caravan.
Minutes later, the skeleton of Maria Goretti, the youngest saint in the Catholic Church, arrived at Saint John Cantius Church - a hulking structure near Chicago Avenue and Halsted Street - where hundreds stood in silence on church steps.
The skeleton, entombed in a wax statue of Goretti's likeness and stowed in a glass casket, was made available for visitation throughout the day Monday and overnight before heading to another location on Tuesday as part of a 16-state tour.
