'Globes' won for NBC; CBS was most-watched overall last week

NEW YORK (AP) - CBS held tight to its customary most-watched status last week, beating all rivals in prime-time viewership and claiming 13 of the Top 20 shows.

Fox had the No. 1 broadcast with Saturday's victory by Seattle over Carolina, seen by 31 million football fans, according to the Nielsen ratings company.

Two editions of Fox's returning "American Idol" ranked 16th and 17th. And that network's much-hyped melodrama "Empire" premiered in 20th place with nearly 10 million viewers.

Otherwise, the good news mostly belonged to CBS. Overall for the week of Jan. 5-11, it averaged 12.2 million viewers. Runner-up Fox had 10.4 million and NBC had 7.3 million viewers, followed by ABC with 5.2 million and Univision with 3.0 million.

USA was the week's highest-rated cable network, averaging 1.97 million viewers, followed by no fewer than six more channels (TBS, Disney, FX, Fox News Channel, Discovery and TNT) beating the next-most-watched broadcast network, Telemundo, which had 1.46 million viewers, followed by ION's 1.2 million, and, with 980,000 viewers, the CW.

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts, as usual, with an average of 10.7 million viewers. ABC's "World News Tonight" was second with 9.9 million and the "CBS Evening News" had 8.7 million viewers.

For the week of Jan. 5-11, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: NFC Playoff: Carolina vs. Seattle, Fox, 31.0 million; AFC Playoff Postgame: Indianapolis vs. Denver, CBS, 28.5 million; NFL Playoff Pregame: Carolina vs. Seattle, Fox, 20.3 million; "NCIS," CBS, 19.8 million; "Golden Globe Awards," NBC, 19.3 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 18.1 million; NFL Playoff Post-game, NBC, 18.0 million; "NCIS: New Orleans," CBS, 17.73 million; "60 Minutes," CBS, 17.68 million; "Blue Bloods," CBS, 12.9 million.
