Officials in Marquette County approve timber sale at airport

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Officials in Marquette County have approved a $97,500 bid for a timber sale on 321 acres of county-owned property at and around Sawyer International Airport.

The Mining Journal of Marquette reports (http://bit.ly/1Clvsw8 ) the high bid from J. Carey Logging Inc. of Channing was approved Tuesday. The timber harvest is expected to be completed by mid-June. The airport is in Marquette County's Forsyth Township, about 15 miles south of Marquette.

The newspaper says officials want to remove trees at the airport in part to reduce habitat for wildlife that might pose a hazard to aircraft.

The county solicited bids through its website, an advertisement and notices mailed to companies on a timber sale list maintained by the county. Officials say three other bids were received.
