Soo Locks to remain open for additional 24 hours

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) - An emergency 24-hour extension has been ordered for the 2014 Lake Superior Shipping Season at the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie.

Instead of closing at midnight on Thursday as planned, the locks will remain open to allow boat traffic until Friday at midnight. A local engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers tells WBUP-TV (http://bit.ly/1CuiFpl ) that ships bound for the Soo Locks must depart from a Lake Superior port no later than Thursday at midnight.

The extension was ordered due to inclement weather that prevented some boats from passing through the locks. The engineer says traffic was backed up due to gale force winds and cold temperatures that caused ice buildup.

Soo Locks officials are expecting to report record numbers next week from the 2014 shipping season.
