Hanover Park boy drowns on family camping trip

A 2½-year-old Hanover Park boy with autism drowned Saturday near Dixon while camping with his family, authorities said.

Bradley Diebold was reported missing at 12:38 p.m. Saturday at Woodhaven Lakes Campground in Sublette, about 80 miles west of Hanover Park, after he disappeared unnoticed, police said.

While Lee County sheriff's deputies investigated, campground staff members began a search and found the boy unresponsive in a canal about 30 yards from the family's campsite.

The boy was taken to Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital in Dixon, where efforts to save him were unsuccessful.

While Monday's autopsy results ruled the death an accidental drowning, a pathologist is conducting a routine toxicology report, Lee County Coroner Jesse Partington said.

Toxicology results are expected within the next two weeks.
