Germany's Eggert, Benecken win WC luge doubles at Placid

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) - Germany's Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken won the World Cup luge doubles race on Friday at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

The World Cup leaders notched their second straight victory to start the season, finishing two runs down the 17-curve course in 1 minute, 27.583 seconds. They had the fastest time in each heat and beat the Austrian team of Peter Penz and Georg Fischler by .382 seconds.

Latvian brothers Andris and Juris Sics won the bronze, just over a half-second behind the Germans.

The U.S. team of Justin Krewson and Andrew Sherk finished sixth, followed by teammates Matt Mortensen and Jayson Terdiman in seventh.

Both U.S. sleds leapfrogged the German team of Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt, who had the fastest starts on both runs and were in the hunt for the podium until a slipup on the second run relegated them to eighth, 1.1 seconds behind the winners.

The third American team of Jake Hyrns and Anthony Espinoza finished 11th.
