Aurora homes evacuated due to gas leak
More than a dozen homes were evacuated and roads were closed throughout the night Monday due to a natural gas leak near New York and Union streets in Aurora.
Authorities said 14 homes and one business were evacuated when a contracted construction crew ruptured a four-inch gas main around 2:45 p.m. No injuries were reported and gas service to the homes was shut off.
Nicor spokeswoman Jae Miller said crews received a call around 4:22 p.m. about a main being hit at 632 N. New York St.
"They're working to shut off the flow of gas safely and quickly," she said, adding that the cause of the hit remains under investigation.
Several streets were closed, including New York between Union and Root; Spencer from Spring to Galena; Union southbound from Spring to New York; and Madison at New York.
Shortly after 9 p.m. Aurora spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the roads were still closed and rain was slowing progress on capping the leak.
