Animal Hospital of Lake Villa hosts Therapy Reading and Egg Hunt
Submitted by Animal Hospital of Lake Villa
Now in existence for more than 20 years, Animal Hospital of Lake Villa takes pride in helping the community grow.
The hospital recently held a Therapy Reading for kids of all ages, where participants had the chance to read to K9 Officer Star of the special operations canine unit at Seldin Security. The event encouraged kids to read out loud and helped some of the shy readers come out of their shells.
Afterward, Seldin Security K9 officers Nadja and Star did a quick demonstration of what it is they do in the field. One of the kids was "lost" (he was asked to hide anywhere he wanted), and K9 Officer Nadja, who is retired from the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, was able to find him by his scent.
She was also able to find items that were hidden throughout a back grass area. Then the dogs demonstrated some of the other "tricks" they get to do out on the job.
The greatest part of this demonstration was that it really taught the kids to not fear the K9 officers. Officer Terry Kaminski also went over, at various times, to never pet a German shepherd without asking for permission.
The kids also were able to take part in an egg hunt, where they got to win candy, golden dollar coins and even some heartworm/flea and tick prevention for their pets. The animal hospital offered cookies and juice for the kids.
