Geneva middle schools honor veterans

Geneva Middle School North students, staff members and parents honored America's veterans Tuesday during the 18th annual Veterans Day ceremony.

Up to 75 veterans were greeted with welcome signs that lined Viking Drive just outside the school as they arrived for the ceremony.

"Some of the men that I led in Vietnam were only a few years older than you students here today," said decorated Vietnam veteran Capt. Van Stone of Geneva as he spoke to the crowd.

"You may be called to serve and defend you country some day, but I pray that you never have to," he added.

Stone then reminded veterans their job is not done.

"It is up to each of us to teach the youth of America what it means to stand up for the ideals that American veterans have fought for."

The ceremony ended as the "Marches of the Armed Forces" was played by the eighth-grade band as part of a tribute to the veterans.

Geneva Middle School South students also hosted veterans Tuesday.
