Today's snow makes suburbs as pretty as a Christmas card

Sometimes snow can be a beautiful - rather than annoying - thing.

Even when it falls just before the weekly morning rush hour.

Such seemed to be the case Wednesday, when maybe an inch or so dusted the suburbs. Traffic seemed to survive.

The heavy weight of the snow blanketed trees, creating a picture-postcard setting.

Staff photographer Brian Hill was assigned to take some "pretty" snow pictures to illustrate that.

Traveling between St. Charles and Elgin, this is what he shot, including a photo of George and Cindy Barthel and their dog, Tassie, setting up to take - you guessed it - a Christmas card photo at Ferson Creek fen in St. Charles.

After watching and photographing the couple attempting unsuccessfully to beat the camera's self-timer, Hill volunteered to press the shutter for them.

A pretty scene, indeed.
