Stabbing suspect also accused of hate crime

A 26-year-old South suburban man faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and committing a hate crime after stabbing an elderly black woman in a grocery store, authorities said.

Bail was set for Pol Danilov of Homewood at $500,000 when he appeared in court Saturday. It was not immediately clear if he has an attorney.

Cook County prosecutors say Danilov told police he stabbed the 79-year-old woman with a steak knife because she was black and an "easy target."

Authorities say the woman suffered a punctured lung after being stabbed four times with a five-inch blade Friday morning at a grocery in Homewood. Danilov was arrested at the store.

Homewood police say the victim was hospitalized and is expected to make a full recovery.
