Hoffman Estates Redhawks hope to repeat as national champs

The Peewee Hoffman Estates Redhawks football team is headed to Florida this weekend to defend their title as reigning Pop Warner national champions.

The team, coached by Rick Cyr, has a perfect 12-0 record this season, defeating teams from Detroit, Cleveland and Indiana to move onto the national finals at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

The team of 21 players is traveling by vans, at an average cost of $1,200 per player. The Hoffman Estates Redhawks organization is seeking help from the community through contributions to its GoFundMe page at gofundme.com/psc83mnw.

The organization is a strictly volunteer program, run by parents, for the children. No players are turned away because of economic status or athletic ability.

Cyr said the team doesn't want any of its players to miss out on this opportunity due to financial hardships. The organization is nonprofit that relies heavily on sponsorships and fundraising.
