Fire causes $250,000 in damage to Hoffman Estates home

A Hoffman Estates home was heavily damaged by a fire late Friday night, authorities said Saturday.

Fire officials estimate the cost of the damage at $250,000. The home did not have working smoke detectors or a sprinkler system, officials said.

Firefighters were initially called at 11:04 p.m. Friday to a fire on the 500 block of Western Street. But about five minutes later, they found the burning home was actually located on the 700 block of Maywood Lane, about a block southeast.

The first units arrived to the two-story home at 11:13 p.m. and saw smoke from the rear and heavy fire in the basement.

They searched for three residents initially reported to be inside but later confirmed that the homeowners were on vacation and that the home was not occupied at the time of the fire, authorities said.

Just before midnight, the fire was extinguished.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
