Basketball tournament supports the hungry
St. John's Lutheran Church and School in Lombard invites teams to enter its fourth annual Hoops for Hunger 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and Silent Auction to raise money for the church's ministry in Nicaragua.
The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, in the school gymnasium, 215 S. Lincoln Ave., Lombard.
The tournament is open to teams of three or four players, from fourth-graders through adults. All players will receive a drawstring sports bag and winning teams will be given medals.
This year's silent auction boasts more than 100 items with a variety of price points, including Blackhawks photos, spa packages, fitness memberships, entertainment tickets, restaurant gift cards and a variety of themed gift baskets. Most items have been donated by local businesses.
Concessions will feature both savory and sweet homemade goods along with St. John's secret recipe sloppy joes.
All proceeds will go directly to support the feeding program and ministry in Nicaragua funded by St. John's. The Nicaragua mission team travels at members' own expense twice each year to distribute school supplies and hygiene kits, complete repairs in the rural schools and the area church, and to oversee the distribution of food for children at the feeding center.
Register online at stjohnslombard.org under "Events," or in person at the church office during business hours.
