Positive Strokes to host scholarship fundraiser

Positive Strokes Art School, 125 W. Colfax St., in Palatine, is a private community art school offering art lessons and creative workshops to all ages. The school opened its doors in 2000 - more than 15 years ago - and has grown to be a valuable part of the community.

With growth comes the ability to better serve the public, and Positive Strokes has done just that. Along with donating time, teaching and monetary donations to local schools, the Palatine Chamber, the Rotary Club and several other organizations, Positive Strokes also gives out scholarships to local children who would otherwise not be able to afford lessons or who are in need of finding a way to a more positive self esteem.

This year Positive Strokes hopes to offer 25-30 scholarships to local children and teens. Each scholarship is valued at $135-$175. This means that at least $4,500 needs to be raised to cover expenses (teaching and materials). Scholarships are given through schools, teachers, organizations and private referrals. Positive Strokes welcomes referrals from all sources. Each scholarship entitles a child to six-eight weeks of classes.

Over the past 15 years, Positive Strokes has given out more than $16,000 in scholarship money. The school has also personally supported more than $25,000 in scholarships to children that have shown the desire to continue classes when their scholarship time has run out.

The annual scholarship fundraising event will take place from 2-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, and noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at 125 W. Colfax St., in Palatine. Activities will include tours, painting and ceramic demos for kids and adults, hands-on fun for kids, face painting, music, refreshments and more.

There will also be raffle baskets that will appeal to everyone. Back by popular demand will be a few special raffles, including the "Wishing Tree," which will hold a variety of gift cards and certificates worth more than $750, a Lake Michigan sailboat trip and more.
