Cubs claim LHP Olmos off waivers, release Ryan

After losing him to Baltimore in a waiver claim earlier this month, the Cubs claimed lefty reliever Edgar Olmos off waivers from the Orioles, team officials announced Wednesday.

In addition, the team released veteran infielder Brendan Ryan, who was acquired from the Yankees as part of the Starlin Castro trade. Right-handed pitcher Yoervis Medina also was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh, Cubs officials said.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Olmos made six appearances with the Mariners last season, including two starts. He spent the majority of the season with Triple-A Tacoma where he had two starts and appeared in 20 games.
