Girl Scouts sing for St. Joseph's residents
St. Theresa School in Palatine has been busy with many good deeds in preparation for the Christmas holiday. One of them included a trip to St. Joseph's Home for the Elderly on Northwest Highway in Palatine.
Together with their Scout leaders, the kindergarten Daisies and the second-grade Brownie troops dressed in their school uniforms, Scout vests, and reindeer antlers. The girls traveled from room to room singing Christmas carols.
"It is a good deed to make others happy, especially at Christmastime" said second-grader, Claire D'Amico.
St. Theresa students have a keen sense of giving back to the community and have many opportunities to do so. Some examples, in addition to visiting nursing homes, include a senior citizens luncheon, preparing packages for military personnel, collecting food for Christmas baskets, the walk for the Preservation for Human Dignity, Feed My Starving Children, and many more.
As a community of learners with shared values, St. Theresa School believes that a commitment to service exemplifies faith and knowledge.
Students engage in service projects that encourage interaction, perspective, compassion, problem solving and faith in a socially responsible action that affects positive change.
"Acts of kindness in and around our community forms deeper bonds with each other, which is why we have a strong family-like school community," said Mary Keenley, St. Theresa School principal.
